History
Originally named the Glassboro Normal School, Rowan University was founded in 1923 with the intention of offering South Jersey instructors a two-year program of teacher preparation. The two-year program was extended into a four-year curriculum over time, and the college was a pioneer in providing special education courses for students with disabilities.
The college’s name was changed in the 1950s due to its ever-expanding curriculum, but it was renamed Rowan University after receiving $100 million in donations from businessman Henry Rowan.
