Academics

Rutgers University is the eighth oldest college in the US, having been founded as the Queen’s College in 1766. The New Jersey College for Women was first founded as a men’s college, but it welcomed its first female students in 1918. In 1972, the college became a fully coeducational institution.

The university is home to several architectural treasures due to its rich history. Two notable examples are the 1873-built Sage Library and the 1808-built former Queen’s College Building. Currently, Queen’s College Building houses administrative offices.

The institution has three campuses as of 2011: one each in Piscataway, New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden. It offers 100 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs, 80 academic departments, and more than 170 academic departments.

There are fourteen schools and colleges on the New Brunswick campus, the most well-known being the Rutgers Business School, the School of Arts, and the School of Engineering.

Although the university does not offer online bachelor’s or master’s degree programs, there are online certificate programs available in the fields of skilled trades, sales and marketing, healthcare, and web development.

Admissions

Together with the application fee, applications can be submitted online at the university website. Together with certified high school transcripts or GED results, SAT or ACT scores are required. International applicants must also submit their TOEFL results. Additionally, international students need an F1 visa.

Specific admission requirements for each university school or college are available to view while completing the application. For all programs, the university provides spring and fall sessions. GMAT scores are necessary for business administration degrees, while graduate-level programs require GRE scores. Personal statements and referral letters are also necessary.

Financial Aid

It is recommended that students use the FAFSA to apply for financial aid. Following the processing of your application, Rutgers administration works with you to create a personalized financial aid plan that may include work study and loans.

Currently, the university provides two fellowships:

  1. The Presidential Fellowship, which offers a two-year allocation of a $35,000 stipend.
  2. The Ralph Johnson Bunche Distinguished Graduate Award offers tuition forgiveness and a $15,000 stipend to students from underrepresented cultural backgrounds.

Students with outstanding grades and strong academic credentials are eligible for both grants.

At all three sites, there are also a number of scholarship programs tailored to individual schools. There are multiple dissertation and diversity fellowships available from the Graduate School at New Brunswick. Additionally, students can apply for federal and state scholarships offered by civic bodies.

Students

At the university’s New Brunswick campus, which has over 38,000 enrolled students, student life is thriving with extracurricular activities, organizations, and community events.

The Busch Center has tennis courts, golf courses, soccer fields, and recreation centers with lap pools and fitness centers among its sporting amenities.

Rutgers University The well-known Base Camp on the Livingston campus offers student hiking, canoeing, and kayaking excursions. At the Cook/Douglass Center on the Raritan River, there’s a boathouse.

In addition to the numerous cafés and Dunkin Doughnuts located throughout campus, students can choose to eat at a number of dining halls that are run and owned by the university. Meal plans are sold to students at each of the four dining halls.

The institution hosts a Dance Marathon in April each year to generate money for the Embrace Kids Foundation. The university was able to raise almost $350,000 in 2011!

Athletics 

The university’s sports teams called the Scarlet Knights, and they play a battle song that starts with the words “RU, Rah, Rah.” Rutgers University played its first intercollegiate football game against nearby Princeton University in November of 1869. Baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, and wrestling among the men’s sports offered at Rutgers. Field hockey, volleyball, rowing, and gymnastics are among the sports in which women can compete.

The women’s basketball team routinely makes it to the NCAA Championship and ranked among the top 25 college teams in the country.

Football rivalry dating back decades have prevailed between Columbia University and New York University. There is a rivalry between Seton Hall University and basketball.

Extra Educational Details

786 students took part in this fundraising event, which earned the institution a Guinness World Record for the Largest Gathering of People Dressed as Ninja Turtles in 2008.

The largest assembly of people dressed as Waldo also set a Guinness World Record in 2009.
