Overview
When showing guests around the Harvard University, tour guides are quick to point out that the university was founded in 1636 and is the oldest in the country. Tour guides in historic Harvard Yard explain that during the Revolutionary War, Washington’s troops were housed in Hollis Hall, a red brick building constructed in 1763. Visitors are informed in front of Widener Library that the university system’s library system is the biggest in the world, with over 90 libraries, over 15 million volumes, and over 100,000 periodicals.
Among the university’s most unique attributes are its age and exceptional physical resources. However, very few graduates will claim that the college’s history as the nation’s oldest was the highlight of their time there. It is more likely that they will identify the everyday environment—which is defined by the cities of Cambridge and Boston, a special residential life programme, and the individuals who make the school as what made their experience stand out.
All 360+ years have been spent in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A few miles from downtown Boston, Cambridge is a picturesque city with tree-lined streets and an abundance of shops, theatres, restaurants, movie theatres, coffee shops, record stores, and booksellers. Cambridge is situated along the Charles River.
Scholars
Students have access to a wide range of academic tools and opportunities. Undergraduate students pursuing an A.B. or S.B. select from more than forty fields of specialisation (or majors) and around 3,500 classes annually.
To graduate, students must complete thirty-two semester-long courses over the period of eight semesters. Over the course of four years, the concentration makes up around half of the course load. Engineering, folklore and mythology, computer science, linguistics, economics, history and literature, and biological sciences are just a few of the majors available to students.
Learns
Harvard University The backgrounds, hobbies, and viewpoints of the students here are incredibly diverse. Nearly 70% of the students attend public high schools, and they come from all fifty states in the union as well as over 70 other nations. Since 1977, when Harvard and Radcliffe formed a special collaboration.
The college has been fully coeducational (Radcliffe was fully absorbed by Harvard in 1999). Pupils come from a wide range of social, religious, and ethnic backgrounds. The presence of so many diverse individuals and opinions can only energise one.
Houses
The vibrant environment that surrounds the campus enhances the college’s distinctive residential structure. For each of their four years at the college, students are promised housing on campus, and around 98% of them opt to reside there. Harvard Yard, the campus’s administrative, intellectual, and historical hub, is home to first-year students.
Living in the centre of campus with all of your peers is a terrific way to foster class solidarity and a warm, welcoming environment as you transition to college life. This first year of residence is enjoyable.
Entry Level
Harvard University Harvard admissions is very competitive. In the last few years, only about 7–10% of applications were accepted, despite the fact that over 85% of them were academically qualified. Some of the greatest students in the world are drawn to the school; the majority of those accepted place in the top ten to fifteen percent of their high school graduating classes.
Try your hardest to submit a thorough, well-written application to the Admissions Committee if you choose to apply. Remember this if you are considering applying:
In addition to the Common Application or the Universal Application, applicants must complete Harvard’s own application supplement.
The Admissions Committee takes into account every facet of a candidate’s application before rendering a decision. Your potential and performance in the classroom, your extracurricular activities, and your personal qualities will all taken into consideration. The committee’s top priority is to have faith in your ability to manage the coursework. Make sure you enrol in the most challenging classes your school provides and perform well in them because your high school transcript matters here.
Once the committee determines that you have what it takes to succeed in their classrooms, it will search for what sets you apart from the thousands of other eligible applicants. A few candidates distinguished themselves from the rest of the field by demonstrating exceptional academic promise. Others stand out due to their unique skills or well-roundedness outside of the classroom. Every decision requires consideration of one’s personal traits.
Monetary Assistance
The university dedicated to an admissions procedure that need-blind. This implies that an applicant’s candidature for admission will assessed independently of the financial situation of the applicant’s family. Now that you’ve accepted, how will you pay for it? Thankfully, Harvard is generous with the money it uses to help students.
Harvard University After admitting you, the school will provide for the demonstrated needs of your family to enable you to graduate. Financial aid is provided exclusively on the basis of need. Since the college feels that every student contributes significantly to the institution, merit-based scholarships not offered by the college. Furthermore, since the Ivy League is a member, athletic scholarships not offered.
The percentage of students that obtain financial aid is about 70%. The average financial aid package in the past few years included a grant, a loan, and a campus job totaling over $40,000. The average scholarship was $37,000.
Families making $60,000 or less no longer required to make parental contributions under the Financial Aid Initiative (HFAI). It now envisaged that families with normal assets and incomes of $180,000 or less will contribute up to 10% of their income on average.
Instructors
Harvard University The faculty is a valuable human resource that aids the student body. The instructors are outstanding researchers and, for the most part, friendly, personable individuals. They assist students with their research, hold office hours, and engage in casual conversation with them before or after class or in the Yard during the school day.
The lecturers’ passion perfectly balances the students’ enthusiasm for what they study. In addition to being excellent scholars, the Harvard professors also show themselves to be kind and committed educators. Eighty-eight percent of the faculty members instruct undergraduates, and a recent poll found that the average class size is actually less than you might think—roughly sixteen or seventeen pupils.
Students take advantage of the small class sizes provided by numerous seminars and tutorials. Many students involved in research at some point during their college years, which might include one-on-one work with a professor. A senior thesis project is an option for most concentrations, although a few of the departments do require a thesis.
